This was an interesting hand from last night's Winter Sims Pairs run by the EBU. Michael Byrne commenting thought the best line was unclear and I shared this view. West led the jack of clubs, an obvious singleton, against your normal spade game, and East won with the king and returned the three of clubs. If you trust him, therefore, he does not appear to have the ace of hearts. An expert might not tell you whether he does or doesn't, of course. How would you play?

I'd ruff 8

He does not seem to have A. Fooling me will also fool his pd, where I can construct hands W may not want to play under his K and declarer then can make.

But even if he fooled me, wins the A and plays 3rd , I ruff with 9.

If spade JT are split and 3-3 or W had 4 spades, I can still make.

  • 2 weeks later...

A. When the hA is on my left:

Ruffing high loses to JTxx off and on. (12)

Ruffing middle loses to Hx off (actual case) (8).

B. When its on my right.

Ruffing middle, middle loses to JTx off (4).

Ruff high loses to the same instances under A.

Seems clear not to waste a trump honor here.

Phil, when we know that club lead is a stiff, W holding Hx trump is much less than normal, no?

ruff high

ruffing with the 8 or 9 seems to cater to one holding and that is lho holding JTxx of spades AND that assumes rho no heart A since we would have an uppercut situation anyway. Any 33 or any 42 split where rho began with J7 or T7 still allows us to make even if rho does indeed have the heart ace because there is no uppercut. This does not even include all of the reasonable 42 splits where rho has the long spades.

I am curious did we auto cover the club J or did we duck and rho won the K anyway?

If I've got this right ruffling low only loses if east has precisely 4234 distribution with one spade honour. If he has three hearts you can still make the contract by way of a trump coup. This assumes the heart ace is on the left of course.

Sadly that was the layout and my attempt at a trump coup failed.
