Is it possible that following the 3♥ bid North ran some simulations and determined that, based on what he knew about South's hand, it was best to stop bidding and play in the known Moysian fit at the 3 level? Of course, this wouldn't explain the 3♣ bid.

Obviously lots of problems. I am focused on the first one, bidding 2!S instead of 3!C. My usual hope is fixing an early problem might prevent the later ones from ever occurring.

Not unreasonable, but 2S isn't that far off. Bigger problem is South not then bidding 2NT. There are so many situations where GIB does not appropriately focus on reaching 3NT in minor suit auctions.
