Expert standard range?

Recommended Posts

Should you move the thread to expert section😉?

I think it is generally played as showing 8+ to 12 with a stopper.

If you play "particularly aggressive" overcalls, advancer should probably be more cautious but the standard range of "overcall is 8-17" is already quite large...so I don't really know if it is advisable to pass all 9-10 counts as advancer.

I play it 8+ to 12 ish.

Unfortunately the overcalls being very aggressive does not change their upper limit so you can not negotiate very much on your bottom rank for 1 NT, however you can for its upper range.

You may decide to play it 9+ to 13 if you are overcalling on a dime frequently.

Something like 8-12 but as has been noted you are asking about expert practice on the I/A thread. I see it as "I figure there should be a play for 1NT". If it is 1C on my left I am not worrying all that much about my club stopper. It would be nice to have something like Qx in partner's suit since I have to find some tricks somewhere. With 8 points I probably want a stopper and Qx, with 12 points I feel a need to get in so maybe I don't fuss so much.

Mostly I figure I can make 1NT and I figure my hand won't be too disappointing to partner if he thinks it right to rebid his suit. or show his lower ranking suit. Not everything comes down to high card points.

9-12 or 8+-12 whatever, I agree with jogs that it depends on the vul/form of scoring/exact hand though. I don't agree with apollo that it shows a stopper, what else are you going to do with no stopper and enough to bid? It is the same as 1C (1S) X p 1N or 1C (2S) X p 2N imo, I'd like to have a stopper but what else am I going to do with a balanced hand and no stopper?

Should you move the thread to expert section?

I used to think so too but I was informed otherwise. The experts do look at all the sections and are very helpful here. My impression is that the expert section is for things the experts might not agree on or might have problems with.

And I think it's about 8+ to 12 but I'm no expert :D

(1x) 1y P 1N

What's the expert standard range for 1N? What if you play particularly aggressive overcalls?

(1) - 1

Your side is non vul. Does your partnership overcall 1 with

AKxx xxx xxx xxx?

If so, it may be often right to pass with 9 or 10 and no club stop.

Jx KJx KQxx Jxx

It may be best to pass with this 11.
