Pass or bid?

Pass or Bid ?

Pass of course!

A-Pd has void or stiff and decided not to act over 2. Your spade values vs shortness is not the best thing to have in offense, if not the worst.

B-Pd has 2 or rarely 3 spades, then RHO is bidding 4 with doubleton spades and a monster.

C-You have good values that can defeat 4 so even a -100 or -300 can be expensive.

D-Even Vulnerability is not attractive to take such an extreme action.

E- I know I always say this and will repeat again. we are not in the pass out seat. Assume pd had a monster 2 suited hand in shape but could not make a move over 2 to avoid being misunderstood and taken seriously (6-5 or more). He still has a turn to make a call.

So to me it is not even close. Though I know bidding was probably the winner on this hand.http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

This is not close because the auction and our hand suggests North is bidding 4S on power, not on a fit. This is a good 3C bid over 2S, or if feeling really fruity, a 3NT bid over 3S.

If you reverse the majors, however, I think 5C is automatic.

So I basically agree with all of this except it still feels reasonably close to me. There is a wide basket of hands with a stiff spade that would not act over 2S where 5C is the winning action, e.g. x KQJx xxxx xxxx, x Akxx xxxx xxxx etc. On some of this basket 4S goes down. Of course, there are hands not disimmilar where 5C is a disaster and 4S could not be made: Jx QJxx QJTx xxx .

All of the reasoning by MrAce is correct, it just feels closer to me to bid than it does to him. Also, lets not forget that bidding 5C is basically going to transfer this exact same problem back to the opps. They could be doubling a making 5c with 5S cold or -1 from their perspective, so 5C doesn't have to be "right" to win.
