i double

Jimmy, I think dbl here shows 4-4 majors.

really? seems like a waste, eh? why can't it show a hand with support for the unbid suits, ie a takeout?

This is because pd's dbl DOES NOT promise 44 majors. If you have 4-4 majors, then you will not know whether you have 4-4 heart fit or 4-4 spade fit. By playing responsive dbl here, you are telling pd that you have 4-4 majors and would like him to pick one. Pd's dbl is t/o and he is asking you to pick a suit. So only if you think it is better for him to pick the suit will you do so. This is the point of dbl. If you have only one 4 card major, just bid it. Of course, your responsive dbl could only show 3-3 major. But it is very unlikely at 3 level.

Of course, you can play dbl as penalty, but I strongly recommend to play it as responsive dbl.

Am strongly tempted by double (penalties for my regular partnership), but my partner would probably be mad at me when it makes, and since I like him and don't like making him mad unnecessarily, like others I shall pass, and hope to go positive.

If partner reopens with a double, I'm again tempted to leave it in. I think that I shouldn't, and should try 3nt, but it's very hard not to pass that.

As others have pointed out, it depends on scoring, vuln, and for me, mood.

Double, which is for penalty in all my regular partnerships.

I expect 3 to be down at least one, fairly frequently two down. We might have 3NT, or we might not. If I pass, partner most likely will NOT reopen, and we will defend 3 undoubled.

Hands like this one are quite frequent and they are the reason I play this double as penalties.

I'll pass and pass again if partner reopens. Partner shouldn't have a strong 5/6 card major on this bidding. I'm not bidding a 4 card minor at the 4 level here, with such good defense to 3D.
