  1. 1. Compete?

I can't read the alert on 2H. If it shows 5-5 in the reds, a good case can be made the total tricks will outnumber the total trumps, maybe by 2 or more. However, I'm not sure I want them to compete to 4H which they might make. (give parther KQxxx of spades and out, we get 2 black tricks and a heart.)

Pass.

As Kaitlyn says, 3 might push them to 4 and with LHO having a big red hand, you look like maybe 2 tricks at most on defense. Not revealing the fit here makes the situation much more ambiguious and more difficult for them to bid game.

Do I want to be X'd in 3, I doubt it. Do I want then to bid 4 when I find out one of them has a black suit stiff and they make it? I don't think so. Of course they may bid 4 anyhow, but why reveal any info as I certainly don't fancy 4X.

I'll pass.

So 3/3 decisions are something I don't think I get right as often as I should. Can you explain why you'd push on this one? The AK of spades look almost as good defensively as offensively, the JD is even better in defence than offence, and P probably doesn't have 4 spades or might have competed himself. Meanwhile the odds must be against him having 5 clubs(!), so you're unlikely to be competing on better than an 8-card fit.

you're right that if you end up in 4m it'll normally be an 8 card fit and you'll normally go down, but it's unlikely to be a crisis. your upside is you collect a penalty (if p has a doubleton spade your spades are great on defence) or you play 3S. playing 3S is always going to be worth it. if p has 3 spades, one 3M is going to make, and often 2.

when you have a singleton heart, the opps are normally in a 9 card fit. you want to bid to disturb that at the 3 level if you have a suitable shape. the rest takes care of itself.

this is one of those occasions where 3NT should be a minor scramble which means you can't end up in the wrong minor - after bidding a weak 2S you can't have the values for game.
