Assuming a layout like this, I tried ♥A. ♠Q. Ruff a ♥, ♣Q. But I erred by continuing with ♣J :( Gib has no problem, indicating many unexpectedly successful lines, some of which involve playing on ♦s early and ending with a trump squeeze.

No need for a trump squeeze. You can just play a top diamond, and they either ruff and force you in hearts when you can elope with ten tricks, or they can play ace and another spade when you are also ok.
