Could someone explain more on the auction?

All the money $9xx,000 make up by the players?

Everyone (indivudual or a pair?) has to make a bet?

Does someone make a bet of $5x,xxxx that Bocchi-Duboin winning?

Do we know how much and whom each player bet on?

Are the players all very rich ?!

Thanks

I'm sure that someone else can do a better job explaining, so I shall leave it to them. I just wanted to mention that "Bridge Bum" by Alan Sontag has a big section on a contest of this type (I don't remember if it was the Cavendish or not, my memory for names is awful) and it's one of the more interesting sections of the book, and might give you a fell for what goes on in this competition.

Just had a look at the 1997 auction - total was $1,288,500 !! (60 pairs) WOW - significantly more than 2005 and there's been 8 years of inflation. More big money for Bridge then? Top prices were Lauria/Versace at $64K amd Helness/Helgemo at $62.5K

You are not thinking about this is in the right way. Inflation has nothing to do with it. See why?
