IMPs scoring.

You are in the final round likely needing a big win to secure the event, and so you ambitiously reach 6S. You get the 3 lead (2nd/4th). You let this run round and South wins the queen before shifting to the queen of hearts. Plan the play.

Can't find anything good. The contract looks to me much worse than I though at first.

Bidding marks K in north, and also diamonds should be 5-2 (no chance when they are 6-1). I don't think we can make when J is third normally, I think we should assume trumps are 2-2, and then some lines will allow to make even when 3-1.

If south is 2155 K is falling in 3 rounds, this is probably our best hope. To make we need to win A, A, ruff a club, A, ruff a club and see if it falls. If it does we can run K, knowing that when south ducks it we can enter hand with trumps instead of conceding a heart ruff.

When K doesn't fall in 3 rounds we will need to ruff 4th club, next is K. South can defeat us by not covering when he has Jx QJ AQxxx xxxx, as he will be able to pitch his last club on the third heart. But there is nothing we can do. When he covers we will ruff in hand low, ruff a club in dummy, and now we need to get to hand with a diamond ruff high to draw the last trumps (that we need 2-2) and make the last 2 with K+10.

When J is singleton there is probably some rethink to be done.

T2: win HK

T3: Lead DK intending to discard H. Assume DA covers.

T4: Lead CA.

T5: Trump club.

T6: Lead D10 discarding H.

T7: Trump to hand.

T8: Trump club.

T9: Heart to ace.

T10: Trump club.

T11: Trump heart.

T12, 13 are high trumps assuming I haven't lost anything else.

Wins on 4-4 clubs or short clubs not having the SJ, and South having the DA, and 4-3 diamonds and North having (3+ hearts or no SJ). I am hoping that the double was pure lead direction and not length as it's pretty difficult to make on 5-2 diamonds.

IMO, the best chance is ruff out s, hoping that RHO has say, AQ9x

e.g. A, A, A, ruff a , K covered and ruffed. ruff a .

If K drops in 3, then draw trumps, making 7 x s, 2 X s, 1 X s, and 2 x s.

If K doesn't drop then ruff a with T.

If s are 4-3, claim 7 x s, 2 X s, 2 X s, and 1 X s.

Otherwise, hope for unlikely round suit squeeze e.g.

RHO fails to cover K and

RHO has J x x Q x A Q 9 x x x x x [/hv]

More ramblings...

If South has sometning like J x Q x A Q 9 x x x x x x

then you might succeed with A, A, ruff a , trump finesse K...

  • If RHO covers K, ruff low, ruff a , A, ruff a , ruff a high, draw trumps, and claim.
  • If RHO doesn't cover K then discard a . Now you need to break 4-3 or J to be singleton or to be with RHO. So A, ruff a , ruff a with K.
  • If are 5-2, then ruff a , ruff a with T, draw trumps and claim.

If south doesn't cover with 2254 you could actually make on a squeeze, but that is less likely than other lie outs.

Full hand above. At the table, I actually got a club lead despite the lead directing double (he said he didn't see the double) making things easier still. Looking at the traveller for it, only one other pair made 12 tricks and a couple of pairs went minus (presumably in 6).
