Nasty preempt

IMPs, green vs red

RHO deals and opens 3D. You hold

Kxxxx

Kx

-

AQTxxx

What do you do (we didn't know until after that deal that 4C can be played as C + major, but I'm not sure the hand is strong enough)?

My partner opted for 3S (urgh!) and ended up down 3 undoubled when after a long hesitation I bid 4 with

Tx

AQTxxx

AJxx

x

I was considering but wasn't sure if 3NT or 4H should be better (I didn't think she would venture to the 3 level with a lousy 5-cd suit). Although here nothing seemed to be making in our line (H 5-0, SA in preempter's partner, etc.).

Without resulting anyway, what could be the best way to handle?

Thanks!

I had a similar hand in IRL team-match a couple of months ago.

RHO opened 3H.

I had a borderline, like 12 hcp 5-5 i black suits, and bid 3S on JT9xx, non-vuln.

Pd, despite double-stopper in hearts, raised me to 4S with Kx.

It went down, while 3NT was cold.

So adding your example to the statistics, I now conclude:

- Stefan's Law: With double-stopper in enemies suit and only 2-card support, bid 3NT, stupid!

:D

Even if 3NT goes down here, it seems like the best percentage game-contract.

Tough one but the first thing my partnership rules out is an offshape double.

On this one we bid 3 for the risk reward aspect of not having passed 3nt and game in spades is easier than clubs. Besides, partner passing with short clubs and a spade fit sucks.

I'm with Stefan here in that raising spades on 2 when bad splits are lurking is too committal. If 3nt is not to your taste, bid 4 and partner will pull to spades when you belong there. I might bid either one on any given day but them's my choices period.

I'd also bid 3 with your hand and 3NT with the other one. I just want to add that bidding 3NT doesn't give up the contract because partner can pull to 4 with a suitable hand, so there is no need to raise 3 with a doubleton.
