"Demon Defense & Demon Doubling" by Boehm ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all !!

I have read the following review of

"Demon Defense & Demon Doubling" by Boehm

"Doubling for penalties increases the stakes and raises the blood pressure. For this you need confidence, and that is where tight defense plays a crucial role. Good defenders are willing to risk more penalty doubles. Demon Doublers are not born; they rise from the ranks of Demon Defenders. That is why this book begins with defense, to build a confident foundation for doubling. Part II explains when to double (and when not to) and shows how defending doubled contracts, especially partials, has a rhythm of its own. When you have absorbed the lessons in this book, be prepared for a change in your bridge life. You will win more-a lot more."

I really long to read more of penalty doubles (especially at low level at IMPS scoring) because very little material seems to be available in literature on the specific topic (except perhaps a nice chapter in SJS Simon "Why you lose at bridge", but then the bidding methods and aggressiveness have changed a lot since then).

Does anyone have Bloehm's book and care to review it here ?

Thanks !!

Mauro

There is a book review folder (I created it because I like to see reviews too!) in General Bridge (called Book Reviews).

Mike Lawrence has 2 booklets on Penalty Doubles form his Topics on Bridge Series, #16 & #17 (though they seem to be geared more towards MPs than IMPs).

I think Kelsey also has a section on Penalty Doubles in one of his books (perhaps advanced play?)

I also am interested in Demon Defense! I saw it listed on Karen Walkers book list.

I have read:

Pottage book

Klinger book

Kleinman book

"FREE" gave the Pottage book an A, I give it a C average have read most of that stuff other places.

Klinger gets a B for enjoyment but not alot of meat here.

Kleinman book gets a B-. Have read most of his ideas in other places. This book is very technical and you need a partner to play most of his ideas.

If anyone knows how, feel free to copy and paste this into ARClight's book review thread.

Yes, I found it very amusing, but that's it... Btw, this book has NOTHING to do with penalty doubles and defense, dunno why it's mentioned in this thread in the first place ;)

I don't "claim ownership" of the book review thread I started.

I just think it makes it easier to find reviews if they are concentrated in one folder, as opposed to spread out all over the place. There may be books I've never heard about and would like to read upon seeing a good review. Probably others would also like to see reviews.
