a. Is 4 obvious? What would you do with the South hand?

b. Is the 2 overcall OK? If not, (assuming leaping Michaels available) what is your choice of first call?

While not a prime example for this bid, a leaping Michaels call showing and appeals to me. Will justify the call using the 6th as a replacement for the HHxxx suit i promise. So...

(2) - 4 - (4) allows partner to make an informed decision.

Urgh. Don't like leaping Michaels, don't like the position not using it has left me in.

I'll try doubling now. It prob shows a stronger, flatter hand (though if he has two he can hopefully read me for a stiff), and I won't be thrilled if P passes, but hopefully he can limp into 4 or maybe bid 4N. If he bids 5 I'll correct to 5.

In all honesty, I felt that Leaping Michaels wouldn't convey information accurately when the major suit is longer. Perhaps, upon reflection, I should have pretended that the long suit headed only by a Queen to be equivalent to an average strength 5-card suit.

Over 2 I rank

  1. 2 = NAT. With luck, you will have a chance to introduce later.
  2. 4 = PRE. Likely final contract. No information leakage.
  3. 3 = CUE. Asking for stop OR M-m 2-suiter. Might leave enough room for clarification.
  4. 4 = ART. Leaping Michaels. Suit-length disparity might lead to wrong contract.

Over 4

  1. 4 = NAT. Might now regret initial action.
  2. Double = T/O. Blame transfer. Over 5 you can try 5.
  3. 5 = NAT. 11 is a lot of tricks.
