Team match imps converted to VP.

S playing 3 NT. Dealer was W and passed. N opened 1 and from there South always asked and bid 3 NT. Defense does not know anything about South hand.

Lead: 5 4th best.if from length.

T1= You played small from dummy, East won with Q

T2 = East played 8, West followed by 7

How do you plan?

trick 1` insert the heart J opps know nothing about south hand try to keep it that way. Playing low pretty much gives away the position of the T once the Q holds. We got lucky no dia shift so since we are in dummy play the spade Ace

(who knows maybe the Q will drop singleton) and finesse the J hoping for 3s (or more) 5c 1h and keeping rho off lead in order to protect the dia K. That's my plan and I am sticking to it.

It did not occur to any of the declarers in Wroclaw to play the J and drop a trick when Q is onside.

I will tell later what would happen with your given line, in order to not ruin the problem for others.

hi MrAce,

After 30 minutes, I've tried various full and partial eliminations, throwing West in to cash his s and hopefully lead away, this that and the other, but due to the awkward entry situation between the two hands, I cannot see anything that quite works on best defence. It is 4.30am in the morning so maybe my brain cells haven't quite woken up <_<

Essentially, in my view, the hand is about a finesse, or leading to K and hope it holds. 50/50 either way. Damage limitation says finesse the J into the West hand.

Ok, it's rubbish. I'm playing for -1 instead of trying to make the contract. Be good to see the whole hand at some point and see what declarer actually did.

Lantaron just trusted opponents:

West ducked the heart telling me he didn't have A, and East didn't switch to diamond when he had beat me if A was offside, so I trusted them and playe da diamond to the king

That's exactly what my commentary was, as soon as W ducked 2nd .

I think that is naive. It is obvius to duck the second heart whether or not you have the ace of diamonds.

More interesting inference is why East doesn't switch to a diamond at trick 1.

My partner thought for a very long time on the hand. (And yes, he made it)

I still remember ducking with a king onside and being thrown in for the 9th, it was a flat board though, but ever since this, it will never be an obvious position for me.
