Bridge Base Ambassadors Poll

Recommended Posts

I'm one of the "Don't Know"s.

I have mixed feelings about having so many labels attached to players' names. We already have colour coding being somewhat overloaded (Friends-Neutral-Enemies) and (Star players). The icons help, but we have (Table host) and (Friend-Enemy) and (Star player).

One concern I have is that I'm reluctant to label someone as an embassador based, in a large part, on his or her attendance record. Perhaps we should have an "addiction" rating? (That's tongue-in-cheek.)

Despite my comment, I like the way BBO has been evolving and look forward to useful additions. My hope is that the interface stays reasonably clean and simple. I like software that is easy to use and doesn't get in the way of its real purpose (in this case, to play bridge).

If some people are interested in a certain category of player

and Fred wants to add support for that then I say go ahead.

However, maybe there should be a button to select which

categories in which you are interested. I may not want to

see who the addicted players are but would like to see the

star players.

I think it could also be interesting to see an average of the

person's performance in tourneys, e.g., this person averaged

a top 10% finish after playing 57 tournaments.

I consider this a tricky and potentially contentious issue.

One one hand, I have always been a firm believer that "information wants to be free". I strong prefer systems in which hand records for major tournaments are made freely available for download by interested parties. I think that having large databases of hand records might be very useful to study various contentious issues in bidding theory.

At the same time, my experiences on OKBridge suggest that these databases are often used as primary research materials for vigilantes trying to eliminate cheating from on line bridge. Needless to say, I am not advocating that people cheat, however, in many cases the cure seemed worse than the crime. Furthermore, for any kind of database to really be useful, it would first be necessary to define a set of standardized dimensions to search on. [We would need some mechanism to cross reference bidding and carding with partnership agreements] I can think of any number of enhancements that I would prefer to see. Finally, we have thw whole issue of hosting the database.

I'm not sure where the lines should be drawn.
