Bid again?

hi Bad_Wolf,

Great shape - my favourite 6-5-1-1 :) - great suits (the Kaplan & Rubens count comes out at 16.00) and partner needs so little to make game a possibility, and has already indicated with his 2NT bid that he's got something, so it 4 99.99 out of 100. Once in a blue moon you will be missing both red suit aces and encounter a bad split...but that's once in a blue moon...

I was taught that if you can make 4 opposite a (sub) minimum for partners bid that you can think of in under 10 seconds, bid it. The spade 10 and a red Ace took me one second.

Added: It's a confident game but expecting a 2nt bid to cover 3 of 4 missing key cards is way too much

Any agreements on 2N? It's frequently played as a cuebid instead of natural.

Assuming 2N is natural and 11-ish, I'm easily worth 4D on the last round.

Anyway, I didn't x 1N and its hard to see how I can possibly have a better hand here, so I will cue 4C.

I agree that partner can't have the cards I am wishing, unless without any justification 3 was forcing.

4S strikes me as automatic. If slam makes here I'll bet it needed some very favourable breaks, such as Kx of spades onside.

Exactly!!

The 1 NT opener lies to the right of declarer, so Kx onside looks to be a considerably less than 50/50 possibility on the distribution of opponents outstanding HCPs alone.

The question is not whether to bid again, but what to bid now.

You overcalled in spades and partner made an encourging raise. You have a very good side 5 card suit, a small singleton, a side suit Ace that is singleton too, and a decent SIX card spade suit. Give partner AK of spades and either red Ace and 6S is virtually cold. King of spades and both red Aces also makes 6S virtually cold. Specific cards? Sure, but hardly a monster for the auction partner has put forth.

I am bidding 4C. If this coaxes 4D or 4H from partner, I can make another move - (Roman) Key Card Blackwood would be ideal.

Excellent summary but if partner does not cue 4D I'm giving up.

Loiking at sAK/ hA partner should be driving this themselves once I Q 4C.

You didn't indicate what the 2S bid meant. Is it spades and a minor? Or just spades?

If it's spades and a minor, whether you bid 4S or 4C now depends on your agreements as to the difference between a direct 3S bid over 2S and a 3S bid after the 2NT relay. If 2NT followed by 3S shows an invite with decent spade support, then by all means try 4C. Partner will know the only cards worth anything are spade honors, diamond honors, and the two red Aces. If he has three cover cards, he'll continue. Anything less he probably will pass (you hope).

If 2S just shows spades, however, it's a different story. Partner then likely has a hand like 2452 with lots of useless secondary honors in hearts and clubs. Better just to settle for 4S.

Cheers,

Mike
