I keep trying to come up with 4 hands that justify all of this vul bidding and something fishy is going on unless you play partner for perfect cards that I mentioned in previous posts and looks a 1nt opening bid. Anyway, the author observed that in NT, with such a hand, we can expect to take nine tricks if the suit can be run and six, maybe seven, tricks if it cannot be run. We seldom take exactly eight tricks in NT with this holding. So I either bid 3D, where I will score at least four of my diamonds, or I bid 3NT. I go with 3NT. Cock-eyed or not, I'm an optimist.
