  1. 1. Who should have bid more?

    • W should have bid 4S
    • E should have bid 4S initially
    • E should have bid 4S over 4H

    • Successful preempt - no blame

IMP pairs. 4 is cold, 4X is down 1 (and would have made had S had the A).

Should we have found it? Our overcalls are relatively standard I think - very roughly 9-18 here.

Would I, as W, have bid 4S? I'm not sure but I doubt it. At any rate, I voted "no blame". Assuming we can make 9 tricks and they can make 10 (maybe 11?) is a little close. Both E and W have pretty much just what the other needs to make bidding on look good. This does not always happen.

LOTT says at least 18 and probably 19 trump between the two hands. Kx below the big opponent hand. Even if K is worth a trick, partner needs 3 tricks to beat 4 .

White versus Red opponents, I'm bidding on to 4 and letting them try to figure out what to do

Much depends on opponents methods. Assuming their 4 is hands like these and stronger hands cue first 4 from west is relatively easy in my view. If opponents bid the same with balanced fits you take a considerable risk but at imps you cannot allow to be blown away.
