Nige1 and I played 4x16 boards with lots of swings all over the place. Having gone down by 21 in the first match, I won the next two by 24 and 17, taking a 20 IMP lead. I needed it, hanging on for a 5 IMP victory.

But only thanks to a reoccurrence of Gib throwing unnecessary high cards - had it not done so on trick 2 of the fifth to last board, the match would amazingly have ended in a tie.

Second match between me and Phil 26-25 in favor of Phil - overall quite close. both of us pushed once quite a bit too much and ended up with a big swing otherwise lots of lost tricks by either of us in partscores.

Also got endplayed once by Gib - Decided to open 1D on a 4333 count - gib bids 3D on a 6D 9count with side AQ. Since the bid is a preempt, I have no extras so pass. OT obvious 3N which makes.

Sorry for the delay

Finally came up for air and had time to post the lineup for the next round

These were randomly seeded. I think I got lucky and there were any replays!

Have fun!

Good luck in the semis Alex. Very good match.

Still gnashing my teeth at:

Kqxx A9xxxxx AQ void. 1S p p. I shot 4H. Wonderful gib bid 7h on a 12 count.

Haha yeah you have to be careful if any bid shows up as 26+ points or whatever you can't bid it or gib will bid 6 or 7.

Via PM:

Hello mate,

I'm really sorry but unfortunatley I'm going to have do withdraw from the tourny and give u a bye. The reason is my laptop is having some problems at the moment and going on BBO seems to be crashing it quite a lot :(

all the best in the next round!!

Im somewhat annoyed on the second match on board 15 - where the auction goes 1S-4S: Having Axxxx;AKTx;x:AKx decided to risk 6S.

GIB leads HQ, partner flips with KJxxx;xxxx;Axx;xx. So it looks quite good - i play low and bam SPADE.

Board 3, match 1: Had already decided to duck the opening lead in both hands and didn't really pay attention to East's 8. (Would Gib have played the 8 from any tripleton? I suspect not.)

Board 1, match 2: When East led the ace of trumps and switched to diamonds I assumed trumps were 4-1; but after ruffing the last diamond I should have realised that East started with 2542 and just played the last two rounds of trumps to West's queen, which would then take the last trick for the defence. Trivial, perhaps, but I've missed trump plays like that before. (Maybe Rodwell has a name for them? :))

Board 16, match 2: Interesting decisions to make, both in bidding and play. Bidding: Trying to find the best contract while figuring out what phoenix214 might do at the other table. Play: At first, a squeeze in the pointed suits against West seemed very likely (just give him 5440), but when he followed suit on the A, suggesting 5530, I had to choose between the double finesse in diamonds and a miracle. (I chose the latter, having seen a few below beginner-level defensive plays by Gib recently.)
