BBF Challenge Event: Matchings

As I am to play triangle matches with thymepuns and steve2005, I was wondering if the other two are OK with the following:

1. Each challenge is a 14-board Matchpoints (i.e. BAM) format.

2. Best Hand option will be used throughout.

3. Each player sets up two challenge matches (total boards in the triangle = 84, boards to be played by each player = 56)

thymepuns and I finished our set of 2 matches (14-boards each, BAM)

--- Overall, I lost 13 - 15. Of the 28 boards, we tied 12, I won 7, and thymepuns won 9.

--- Result overviews here: (Part 1) and (Part 2)

I'm waiting for steve2005 to accept the challenge so that we can begin our match.

So how many boards are we supposed to play against each other? MrAce and I only played 1 16-board match, smerriman and TylerE played 4. 64 boards over 2 weeks seems reasonable.

If you want to go 64 boards that is fine with me. It is fun.

But at the end, regardless of who wins, I will ask you to continue and let me be eliminated because I really did not like the BAM thing with GIB.

Just played the second segment, MrAce crushed me by 24 IMPs.

http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=ARDCHALLENGE:38dfda13.2c85.11e6.a318.0cc47a39aeb4-1465286137&u=barmar

On board 1 don't know what I was thinking. First I blocked the diamonds, then I miscounted hearts.

On 10 MrAce psyched a 1 opening, and that somehow got the robot to invite the 50% slam. I bid normally, and the robot decided not to invite. Not sure why. On the other hand, his psyche on board 7 didn't work so well.

On 14 I decided not to try to guess which red suit finesse to take, and hoped LHO would have Qx or maybe RHO could be end-played. MrAce guessed right.

On 15 I took the low road, MrAce invited, and everything worked.

I'm reluctant to post this, but I just finished my 64 board match with P_Marlowe playing IMPs (best hand) and ended up winning by the rather flattering scoreline of 160-40.

Challenge 1 (46-4)

Challenge 2 (54-23)

Challenge 3 (36-5)

http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=ARDCHALLENGE:4037e4e1.2da3.11e6.a318.0cc47a39aeb4-1465408986&u=manudude03

Challenge 4 (24-8)

I really wasn't happy about how I was playing in the second and fourth sets (the last in particular I could have put money on losing 20-30 imps) so was somewhat surprised the gap ended up being as big as it was.

Board 15 : I do not need everything to work to make a vulnerable game. I would still make it even if only some of them worked.

Board 5 : I Went down due to 4-0 trumps.

I sent the 3rd round of 16.

Nice match. Results were random enough, but I got two beers and that's what really counts.

An interesting board from Session 1 - Board 4:

I (South) held QJ32 A972 AK5 A6 and the bidding proceeds

North opens 1 - I bid 2NT (Jacoby); North replies 3 - I try 4NT (RKC); North bids 5!! (showing the Q held by me)

It is clear that North had AKxxxxx. If North also has K, a grand slam is cold. So I bid 5NT (query kings); North bid 6 to show K and deny K.

How good is a grand slam in spades? I chose not to bid it, and lost the board.

Hi,

thanks for the nice words, I am happy that the match up went fairly smooth, less happy about the

final result (*), but it was ok, good luck for the next rounds.

(*) I know some boards, I can definitly do better, some are above my heads, and will be for some time

to come.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I'm supposed to play Jeff Ford but he didn't respond to my challenge.

Hi Phil,

If Jeff doesn't get back to you, I'd be happy to play.

Your call between IMPs or BAM

Board length either 48 or 64 Boards.

I expect to be able to play hands Friday and Saturday

Our 3rd set with Barmar this time I am crushed.

Barmar 21-Timo 2

These hands seemed pretty boring to me, I had a feeling your aggressive style might work against you. And you tried another 1 opener on 11 that bit you.

I was a little surprised you didn't bid game on 9, since I was on the fence. I lost those 2 IMPs there because I chose to play opener for K, so tried to drop it singleton. I was right about his shape. :(

You played well. Yes aggressive style worked against me but overall you deserved to win every imp you won. I can't complain about anything, I played bad, you played well. Good game Barry.http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

We played 1 16-board MP match without the best hand option against each other.

Results:

diana_eva-nullve (http://webutil.bridg...159899&u=nullve): tied

nullve-eagles123 (http://webutil.bridg...202535&u=nullve): nullve won

eagles123-diana_eva (http://webutil.bridg...910&u=eagles123): eagles123 won

Should we play another set of challenges for our 3-way? I'm still a bit confused about the format.

wank & I have so far played three 12-board matches - one to go. He won the first two but I've managed the third.

My scores have been 41.67%, 45.83% & 62.50%, so it's currently a draw!

Against (my) expectations, I managed a win in the fourth match so it looks like I'm through.
