BBF Challenge Event: Matchings

Hi All.

As promised, here’s the tournament bracket.

We have 22 people in a single elimination tournament.

I am going to run things as follows:

There will be two three ways that will each reduce from three players down to two.

• These pairs will have two weeks to run three matches.

• All three matches MUST use the same scoring system and board length

There is also a 16 player section. Over the course of the first two weeks, this section will reduce from 16 down to four

In week three, the two brackets will get merged into an eight person bracket that will run for three more weeks.

Please recall, Challenges only remain active for three days or so. It would really be a good idea to contact whomever you’ll be playing against and arrange (roughly) when you’ll be playing.

You have until 6:00 EST on Sunday the 12th to provide me with the results from round 1

Sixteen Player single elimination

p_marlowe x manudude03

johnu x broze

mrace x barmar

gordontd x hrothgar

smerriman x tylere

tie53 x nige1

phil x jeffford76

Am I reading this correctly? Bracket 1 people will have 25% to make it to the final bracket, while Bracket 2 people will have 66%?

If you just add 10 byes, you'd have 10 people with 50% and 12 people with 25%, which is still much more fair.

If you don't like byes you can have six three-ways with a single survivor, in which case you'd have 4 people with 50% and 18 people with 33%.

I know I'm not a participant so I shouldn't have a say. I just don't get it.

Can you squeeze wank in? He applied in the other thread and I missed it.

Going from 22 to 23 players makes the bracketing much trickier.

I'll tell you what, I'll be very nice and let him take my spot.

I can sub in if someone flakes out...

Maybe others will join in, you don't have to give up your spot. If new players apply by the time results are due, set up a new round for them.

All of this is true, however, it also presumes that people are taking this seriously.

I was more hoping that folks would have fun, be able to post some interesting hands, and of course bitch and moan about the GIBs

Ok, how many matches do i need to make with Barmar? Just 1 or 2? He and I decide scoring is that correct? What is the default number of boards ?

Yep, some further clarification on what to do would be good. It says 3 matches in the first post, but not the number of boards.. so is it best of 3 independent matches? Or a total over all matches (in which case 3 matches of 4 boards is the same as 1 match of 12).. or..

Could leave it up to each pair to figure out everything themselves, but would prefer just being told exactly what to do as reasonable defaults; if others want to make up their own rules they can do so.

As I recall, the most boards that you can create for a single challenge is 16.

Were I to play a 64 board match, I would plan to challenge my opposition to two x 16 board matches and have him challenge me to the same

Yes this would seem to be the obvious way to structure it and would make it easy to deal with additions or dropouts.

I agree that this would have been a better way to structure things.

If I run a second iteration of this, I'll ask for recommendations for the bracketing before posting anything.

That's for the 3-ways, it doesn't say anything for the head-to-head matches.

I guess it's like matches at team tournaments: head-to-head is just one match, while 3-way is 3 matches: A vs B, B vs C, C vs A. In the 3-way, each player plays only 2 of the 3 matches. If it's 2 survivors, the survivors are the two that win the most matches, and there's some tie-breaker rule like net imps.

did we decide best hand or not? i see a suggestion in the other thread NOT to play it, but if there was an actual final call, i missed it

Players have the option to chose best hand or unconstrained.

If there is no agreement, then unconstrained is the default.

As I am to play triangle matches with thymepuns and steve2005, I was wondering if the other two are OK with the following:

1. Each challenge is a 14-board Matchpoints (i.e. BAM) format.

2. Best Hand option will be used throughout.

3. Each player sets up two challenge matches (total boards in the triangle = 84, boards to be played by each player = 56)

---- I get the ball rolling by "challenging" thymepuns and steve2005 later today. Hopefully, you will be in a position to accept/play within 3 days (reply here, if that does not work)

---- Once these are complete, the next player (say thymepuns) will "challenge" steve2005 and me. That's two more matches -- ideally to be played by next weekend.

---- Finally, the remaining player challenges the other + me. That's the final two set of matches -- timeline TBD.

At the end of it all, each of us would have played 28 boards vs. every player. The cumulative score counts towards the ladder.

Agreed?

I was ahead by 4 IMPs going into the last hand. Then I decided to get greedy on a cold 4 and got punished for it, losing 10 IMPs.

First of all ty for the game. It was fun.

Why exactly are you calling your line "greedy"? What am I missing? In order to call a move "greedy" it has to gain something that the safer line does not. What were you expecting to gain with early finesse, even if did work?

Board 4 you also reduced your chances by a lot imo. Assume the guy with 4 trumps had doubleton or assume he had stiff http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif If you play you reserve your finesse even if West had doubleton (or stiff ) Well all was good and you did not get punished for it but small things catch sooner or later as you got caught on board 16.

Board 7 you defended better. What was I thinking?

Yeah, maybe I just wasn't thinking clearly.

Just watched your play, basically a dummy reversal -- very nice.

Barry I hope you did not misunderstand me. I was not bragging. My line can be slightly better than yours but to be honest we both missed the ocean on boat on that hand.

As soon as i recognized my mistake, I posted it on forums http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/74400-play-6-cl/
