Opening bid?

We play weak 2-bids with Ogust. All are vulnerable. RHO/dealer passes.

What should I bid?

I rank

  1. 1 = NAT. Get the show on the road.
  2. 2 = NAT. OK in Zia Style. More fraught using Ogust. If partner responds 2N, you might experiment with a 4 rebid.
  3. Pass = NAT. Hoping to cue-bid, bid 2N. or double later.

I'm passing.

If you do decide to step in with this hand, then you've got to bid 1 rather than 2 . Give partner as little as x Axxxx xx xxxxx and 4 is virtually lay down. If you open 2 , partner may never be able to explore for a fit.

Since you have shape you can afford the pass - both majors is the easiest hand to enter the competitve bidding afterwards anyway so you are not losing much.

If you open 2S - as mentioned before the higest risk is missing out on a heart fit. I doubt the bidding would go 2S all pass - just because you are looking at a lot of shape - but the problem is that opening a preempt you are telling your partner that you want to play spades unless he really insists on something else - which frankly is not the case with your hand - you would like to play in any of the major suits.

As for 1 spade opening - the biggest problem is that when your partner has minimum forcing game values and you overbid, cause you do not have a full opening bid - although 4M will have some play anyway.

What are the expert criteria for steaming in with 4M on 6-5 hands? Can be very productive, IME, but I see here we are 2nd seat vuln and hold both majors, so maybe not the time or the place?

Yeah, suit not good enough, wrong seat/vul, both majors.

3rd green AKQxxx, x, x, Jxxxx 4 easy.

pass.

I'm a little bitter because I played 3NT=65 majors either way (learned it from fred) in hundreds of hands of bridge but it never came up.

edit: oops Marlowe just mentioned it.

What strength?

weak-ish. in terms of hcp maybe 6-10? the point of it (for me) wasn't to change the range of 1-level openings, at least not too much. this was in contrast to the way constructive weak twos, where I was happy opening 2M on hands otherwise I would've opened 1M on. Not sure how standard this all is.

I used to think this was a pass but have been convinced by modern bidding tendencies that it is better to open now and try to slow down later. The trick is to prevent partner from making a penalty double until he gets the idea that I am very distributional and uncooperative about doubling. This is not always possible. Alas, nothing is perfect.
