newbdonkey
Hi,In the following deal, 6♦ seems possible. Sticking to SAYC, how can one arrive at this?[hv=pc=n&s=sa3ha975da7653c97&w=skq972h642dt2cjt2&n=st85h3dkj984cak83&e=sj64hkqjt8dqcq654]399|300[/hv]Please advise.Regards,
NickRW
I'm not an SAYC expert, so I'll steer clear of making recommendations about specific sequences. I will say that I can see many good pairs failing to diagnose this one though.
billw55
I won't lose any sleep over missing a 23 point slam that only makes on a perfect fit.
helene_t
If South is dealer then it goes1♦-3♥ (splinter) and then maybe South can bid slam. If north is dealer I think it is difficult. If he opens, East will overcall and you probably won't get to show the heart singleton. And if he doesn't open, South will probably not envision slam opposite a passed hand, even if North splinters. Cyberyeti
Always indicate who the dealer is in this sort of thing. I don't know SAYC so can't recommend sequences, it's actually easiest to bid if it starts with E's 1♥-P-2♥ as now both partners know about N's singleton heart from the start. Stephen Tu
Going to be super hard sticking to SAYC, which doesn't include splinters and doesn't even have forcing minor suit raises.
gwnn
I think N should splinter and NS should stop in 5D. I don't mean should normatively but as a matter of probabilities. In SAYC I guess N needs to bid 2C then 3D and N will be wary of 3NT all the time and they will arrive in 5D again.
42krunner
Playing MP's, after a pair fumbles into 5D, they should just bid 6D to protect against the field being in 3NT. That's how you get to 6D. :P

That's how you get to 6D. :P Except of course that here 5♦ will win you the MPs anyway as 3N makes exactly if the diamonds behave while 5♦ makes an overtrick, and if the diamonds don't behave, 5♦ makes but 3N doesn't. mikestar13
You won't find 6♦ on this perfecto even playing a better system than SAYC. Count it a triumph if you can diagnose that this is the rare matchpoint hand where 5m is better than 3NT--very hard to do if North can't show heart shortness. If he can, 5♦ is a fine contract. East throwing in a heart overcall here (if North is dealer) makes the task easier, not harder.
