Law 30 PASS Out of Rotation

A. Before any player has bid:

Offender must pass when next it is his turn to call.

B. After any player has bid:

1. At RHO turn to call: Offender must pass when next it is his turn to call.

2a. At Partners turn to call: Offender must pass throughout

3. At LHO turn to call: Treat as Law 25

Q1. Does ‘Bid’ in 30A and B mean ‘Call’ i.e. what happens if there has been a prior Pass i.e a call not a bid?

Q2. Law 30 B3: Treat as Law 25 - I’ve read this now a dozen times and for the life of me I can’t figure out what it is means – help!

Bid & call are carefully distinguished in the laws and shouldn't be confused in reading them.

L30A3 applies when a player has called and then (at his LHO's turn to call) immediately calls again. The law tells us to treat this as an attempted change of call.

Q1: No, "Bid" here means exactly what it says: "Bid".

So long as no player has bid in this auction:

- If a previous call was a double or a redouble that would have been an illegal call.

- Law 30A still applies to your PASS out of rotation whether or not some other player has already passed.

Q2: If someone has already bid in this auction and it is your LHO turn to call then the last call in turn must have been made by you.

Consequently your PASS out of rotation cannot have been your first call in that turn and must therefore have been a change of your first call.
