If that's true then they must be replacing it with something else. They can't just

leave a vacuum.

A replacement is available. It is called HTML5.

 

But it does require a software rewrite. Some parts of BBO have been done in HTML5. The rest of it sounds like a major headache.

The article I read just said that it won't be removed, it just won't be enabled by default (except for a handful of well-known sites that still depend on it). When you go to a site that needs it, like BBO, you'll be asked if you want to enable it, and it will remember your choice.

 

So I don't think the end is quite nigh, but it's getting closer.
