Laird
Wow!.... Thanks Misho and all contributors.... The moral so far for those in this section (and Scots everywhere) seems to be, " Don't get involved with Poles or Bulgars in bridge games for money". :oIf I may I would like to discuss 2/1 in a similar fashion... I've an idea its not going to be any less interesting. Please keep in mind the area of posting... Thanks everyoneJohn
inquiry
BBO Advanced is a standardized 2 over 1 bidding system Summary1NT 15-17 HCP, stayman, jacoby with 4 suit transfer and super accepts, 3C/3D are minor two suiters (weak and strong) and 3H/3S are 5-4-3-1 with two long minors and singleton in the bid suit (or you could play fragment by bidding your 3 card major), Texas transfer, smolen, Gerber, System on over DBL and lebehnsol (you could substitute rubinshol if you like). After stayman and a major suit response, rebid 3 other major is slam try, splinters after major response ask for slam with good working max. After stayman and 2D responses --> 2H is weak major two suiter, 4D/4H are texas with 6-4. After minor suit transfer, new suit by responder is shortness. System is on after 1NT-x of 1NT-2C unless 2C shows the majors. 2NT 20 to 21 HCP, texas, jacoby, stayman, smolen, 3S-> forces 3NT for minor suit hands. Over 2N-3S-3N: 4C/4D shows bid suit, 4H/4S show shortness with 5-5 in minors 3NT=gambling, solid suit no outside A or K, 4C= bid suit, 4D= singleton ask 1C/1D opening = 3+ cards, walsh responses, inverted minors, 2N = 10 to 12 HCP, 3N = 13-15. After 1C-1D-2N all bids are natural and forcing otherwise, Wolff signoffs. 1H/1S opening = 5 card majors, 1NT Forcing, 2over1 game force, 2N = normal jacoby (3 level rebids shortness 4 level rebids 5-5), Bergen by unpassed hand, Splinters, 3N=15-17 hcp, REVERSE drury (1H-1S-2N-all bids natural and forcing not wolff). 2C – strong artificial, 2D response waiting, initial 2H response = double negative 2D/2H/2S = weak two. 2NT response is feature ask, raise only non-force. Weak Jump shifts, weak jump overcalls, negative and responsive doubles through 4D, support double and redouble through 2H, Maximal double After suit overcall, new suit is 1 round forceAfter 1NT overcall system is onAfter opponents 1NT opening bid cappelletiUnusual NT and Michaels cue bidsIngberman over reverse (lebehnsholish 2NT rebid)2-way new minor forcing over 1NT rebid (but no after 1H-1S-1N or 1C-1D-1N)Wolff signoff after 2NT jump rebidSerious 3NT and last train to Clarksville (both optional)Upside Down Count and Attitude3/5 leads versus suit, 4th best versus NT Roman keycard blackwood 14,03 responsesCue-bid first or second round controls up the line, no cue-bidding at 5 level- this is Exclusion RKCB. Do not cue-bid singleton or voids in partners suit. Advantages: Suits are bid naturally, easy to jump raise preemptively when partner opens a club, 2/1 game force simplifies game and slam auctions, five card majors make apply the law of total tricks easy in competitive auctions. Many players learn a version of this natural style when they first take up the game. EASY to find partners on line who play most if not all of this system (try finding random partners to play moscito or precision… if you find one, they probably play a different variation than you anyway). Gives you a better chance to bid with the field so that your superior card play can control the outcome. Disadvantage:Very wide range 1 level opening bids, people are opening many 11 hcp hands, and can actually have 21 or 22 hcp and still open 1 in a suit. This is partially overcome with the use of Ingberman following reverses. Gives you too good a chance to bid with the field, so that you don’t find pick up a lot of tops (and bottoms) for getting into the unusual contracts that in fact may have a better chance of winning matchpoints. It is not as hip as playing nightmare, ultimate club, moscito or polish club. After all, little old ladies and even novices play 2/1 game force, so how can it be right? Other considerations:The ability to find partners should not be overlooked. And this isn’t just from the standpoint of random partners. I was fortunate enough to get to play with Fred a couple times now using this. There are a lot of very good players who, while maybe preferring some other system, still not only know but can play a very good game with BBO Advanced. I think whatever system you prefer, you should add BBO ADVANCED to your card as an alternative system. It is effective and easy to play. No need to read 130 plus pages of notes just on the 1C opening bid. It would be nice if nearly every player on the BBO site added BBO Advanced or BBO Basic as one optional system under their player profile. the hog
Some Comments Playing 2/1 in a serious partnership, this was the MOST difficult system to learn and play; much more difficult than an artificial system. Surprised by that comment? You shouldn't be. Ben has already pointed out some of the advs/disadvs of the system - Disadvs Coping with wide range openings means lots of treatments are necessary. 2/1 GF means that after a 1 level suit response or a 1NT response, again lots of treatments are necessary. There are many different flavours of 2/1. Lawrence, Hardy etc etc. If playing with a pick up pd be sure that you have discussed the nuances of the system. Some players for example play that a reverse carries no extra strength, (a big mistake imho). If playing this style how do you show extra values? Is 2m followed by 3m a GF or can it be dropped etc etc. Some play weak jump shifts, some play strong JS and some play a form of Flannery JS (1C/D 2H = 5H/4S weak, 1C/D 2S = 5H/4S inv), which of these treatments does your pick up pd play? (The last one I mentioned is rare). Advantages Most bids mean what they say Gives you too good a chance to bid with the field,I think this was a tongue in cheek comment from Ben. Bidding with the field is a good thing, generally. Allow your defence and card play to get you good scores. Having lots of agreements can be good as it forces you to discuss lots of sequences with partner. This has to be a good thing in a serious partnership. You can find more partners on line, because people will say they can play 2/1 even if the reality is that they can't. General comment Note that the thread refers to 2/1 in general. It does not refer to bbo 2/1, where many of my above queries on treatments have been answered.
mishovnbg
2/1 Advantages - like any natural system - flexible and easy to play ( at least at surface ;D ) Disadvantages: - many contracts from probably wrong ( weak ) hand after 1/1, weak jump shift and 1 minor-2NT responses. - "pre-empt" partner with strong hand by 2CL and 2NT openings - "eating" so many levels of bidding with strong hands is not without cost. Result is regular guessing, only good thing is they come very rare, but on other side is waste usage of nice 2CL and 2NT bids 8). - 1NT round forcing result in 1 level higher contracts and lose of statisticaly better 1NT contract without fit in major and min bal opener. - 2/1 GF + Bergen raises after 1SP opening leave to any invitational hands ( for example with good 5-6 minor and weak side doubleton ) only rebid of 2NT without fit - in second suit - just bad bidding, games is much more often than slams. - Rebids of 1 major opening after 2/1 are so unlimited that guessing is just unavoidable. - Jump reverses with 5-4 and 3th range of hcp ( or 6-3, lol ) to 3 level dont leave enough space to investigate better game or slam. .... Shortly, like any other natural system 12-21 hcp range ::D. Misho
