Mike , just because it is a common hand doesn't make the problem any easier. I chose 1NT, but weaken my diamonds a little and my hand a skosh and this becomes a 1H overcall. Makes this a 3343 pattern with a little less and I'll pass. Double is not a consideration for me - the hand would need to be changed around a lot. Playing standard, that is. Playing OS or Raptor, double and 1H are more appealing.

In the end, you have to figure out what works best for you and your partner, especially in the context of your competitive agreements. You will develop your own body of knowledge that may change over time on how to handle these types of hands.

Good advice from Phil. I overcalled 1H because I hope that pd will be on lead. I prefer to overcall than to pass at MPs. 1NT is out for me as it is Raptor. The best bid is the one that both you and your partner are happy with.

On this hand I passed, LHO bid 3nt and went down 2 when they were locked out of their hand with 8 running clubs.

The other table made a take-out x and somehow ended up in 1NTX.

Hi Mike,

could yo post the 4 hands if you remember them (or at least your pard's hand) ?

Thanks ! :-)

P hand was something like:

QXXX=XXX=TXX=XXX

LHO WAS:

TXX=TX=VOID=AKQJT9XX

RHO SOMETHING LIKE:

KXX=KJ97=AK8XXX=VOID

So I guess that doubling for t/o would have simply driven us to a 1S contract in a 4-3 moysian fit (or, most probably, opps would have looked for game).

Maybe they would double our 1S contract, but in that case I doubt overcalling 1NT would fare any better....

Instead, 1H overcall with AQ8x, with aggressive raises agreed with pard is not appealing to me...

On the other hand, pass runs the risks outlined by Fred and the ther folks.
