Suit combinations

It's been a while since we have had suit combinations. Try these, two of my favourites:

65

AK10973

5 tricks

....

AJ8

1042

2 tricks

Plenty of entries to both hands. Are they too easy? Hidden text will be fine in order to give as many as possible the chance to have a go.

Hand one... my "guess" (this one is pretty standard)

So I hope I don't miss it. Win top honor, then lead towards AT9xx and beat as cheaply as possible whatever RHO plays

Hand two... this one is not a great chance for two tricks...I would try for an endplay later, but if I have to play this suit myself, and I had no clues that RHO might have two or one in this suit, I guess, my guess would be...

Ten and let it "float" if not covered. My line seems to be based upon just a little more than LHO having KQ(x) in this suit. Leading the TEN also caters to RHO having singleton honor. But there is extra chance in the eight in dummy for infra-finessee. If WEST covers the TEN, I win the ACE, and then on the next round I can, and will finessee the eight.

65

AK10973

5 tricks

If entries are no problem, cash a top honor and low to the 7, covering anything RHO plays.

I wonder the best play for 5 tricks if the long suit is in an entryless dummy in 3NT.

I guess leading to the Ten, and if it loses lead to the 9 (if it wins, cash AK)

AJ8

1042

2 tricks

low to J then low to the 8

Let me try the first one:

65

AK10973

for 5 tricks

Assuming ample entries...

Have South cash the A. Next play low from North putting in the 9 from South.

This caters to any 3-2 break and a few 4-1 breaks: any 4 cards with east, or 4 with west and singleton honour with East.

Does not cater to a 5-0 break.

first one:

cash an honor and lead low to the ten next (unless they play an honor). As a side note if you cash the ace and lefty plays an honor, you should play the king next (as a finesse will not help you since you cant pickup Hxxx play for QJ dub).

second one:

lead the ten. Assuming a cover, lead low to the 8 next (restricted choice). What is the technical advantage of leading the ten first one may wonder, as opposed to low to the 8 immediately? If rho has H9 dub or stiff 9, you can pick that up.
