Trap Pass Gone Wrong

Recommended Posts

I'm find with the first pass. It's easy for the opponents to get stuck in 2C for -300/500 when we don't have a game.

Now on the second round, it feels logical that double should show a penalty pass (of clubs) but with enough outside values that our side can probably make something, or defend profitably if partner has diamond values.

So having conveniently defined double to show this hand, I would double ;).

I don't think that partner has to pass a double of 3D. So while I may fancy my chances in 4S I think I prefer my chances in 3DX if partner is minded to leave it. So I would start with X of 3D, and then reconsider 4S as an option when it is not left there. The initial pass over 2C is a no-brainer.

Double shows a slightly better diamond holding for me, and it's not like this hand has stellar defense anyway. I'd hate for partner to convert with 6421 where they come close to making or make and we just have a breezy 4S.

I am always inclined to bid constructively rather than make trap passes in the hope of picking up a penalty - particularly at these colours. But a first round double seems to leave me snookered if partner responds 2D. So I pass, reluctantly on the first round.

Having passed, I am certainly not worried about missing a slam (as Mike777 thinks). I expect my partner's 2S to be based on shape rather than additional strength (she would have doubled with extras).

I have a difficult bid now - 4S might be be right, but it's guessing. I think a second round double gives us the better options.
