How Many Clubs

Recommended Posts

2C

edit: uh I thought the opening was 1S. never mind me. I'll try 3C (too wimpy?) since I'd rather let partner know that we fit clubs. It's not like introducting hearts is going to help over the spade barrage and now we've got to bid potentially a lot of clubs.

Raising spades looks like a good idea.

If we bid 1, what would South's double mean? And is our 1 any balanced hand or specifically 4=4=3=2 when holding 2 clubs?

Opps are bunnies so your guess on the first question is as good as mine. And 1c is only 2 when specifically 4432

I'm bidding 1 to start because I hate to ever suppress a major suit.

If partner can rebid 1 or 1 NT, then he/she doesn't have the 4432 hand and a contract should be good. Since partner has opened a minor, it seems likely that the opponents hold 9+ (unless you always open 5-5 black hands 1 ). Also, 4 could still be a very viable contract.

The downside is that LHO may bid 1 over 1 identifying the fit. But 3 immediately also may be a spur for the opponents to find their fit.

Pay your money take your choice.

1H.

So to answer the original question: 0.

If the opponents are good, they will have discovered their spade fit by

now.

If they are "bunnies", well I try to play a straight game against them,

most of the time, I will be ahead anyway, and I dont want to kill their

fun doing something funny.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Then I think I would go the 3 route too. 1 given the level of the opps should probably be removed from the table, although being bunnies they probably do not have X showing spades available so it could well be successful. 1 being "natural" (ACBL) means that we either have a 9 card fit or two 8 card fits, so the 3 level should not be too far off at Love All even in this case where a low TT count is fairly likely. Sure it is also possible that partner is sitting over there with 4 hearts in a BBH but the odds are against it and this is MP.

Honestly my first thought was "5, anything else is a transfer to 4" but after reading the replies I guess that may be excessive.

This is a common misconception when pre-empting. You often don't want to play the hand. But if lho wants to bid his 5+ card spade suit at say the 4 level he'll often be stretching to an uncomfortable level, leaving himself open to p collecting a penalty (you expect p to have some spades) and if partner has bad spades he can bid on himself.
