Club bridge - match points. Most people play strong club in the event with a catchall 1D.

Opening lead DJ - what line do you take?

The danger here is that W has a singleton diamond and 3 trumps (there's nothing we can do if E has AQ double).

 

We can possibly do something about it if E has stiff A or Q. If E has stiff A and W gets the right switch he can take 2 ruffs, so we can concentrate on stiff Q.

 

So in theory we put K on the table.

 

Of course in practice, the defence have to get it right and E may have to guess which of his aces is standing up to signal if he's 1444 and may get it wrong if 2443 with AQ.

Well I can agree that if you are going to play in spades - the right card to play is the King of spades - but this board has a small twist - is it 100% right that the playing spades here is the right choice?

playing a heart gives up your chances of a wrong switch, and I wasn't convinced it gained anything
