In all likelihood I should have bid 4H over 2S. But given that I have chosen not to, is there any rebid over 2S that would have inhibited North from bidding 4H? If not, what is the point of 2S? Angling for 3N?

That might be true of the 2♥ explanation also. Is it really possible that this has been in the system for all these years and we've never noticed it before?

Quite possibly you should accept the game try with a human partner, but certainly not with GIB. It is notorious for making super-light game tries after a major-suit response and a single raise. Often a maximum solid 14 count offers little play for game.
