manudude03
[hv=pc=n&s=shdc&w=sq95hat6dqt764caq&n=shdc&e=sa63hqj74dk32c987&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=pp1n(15-17%20%5Bupgraded%5D)p2c(5-card%20stayman)d2d(no%205cM)p3h(GF%204!h)p3nppp&p=ckc7c6cad4d5dkdacjcqc4c8dqd8d2djdtd9d3c5d7h2s3h5d6s4c9s2]399|300[/hv] All vul at teams. Strong-ish opps. After upgrading your hand into a strong NT, you find yourself in 3NT on the friendly looking ♣K lead. You can click next to see the play up until the critical decision. Now do you cross in spades and take the heart finesse or do you play hearts from the top preserving the ace of spades? edit: opps play suit preference discards and standard count if it matters (and if you choose to believe them). helene_t
Taking the heart finesse is best if S has ♥K while cashing ♥A is best if S has ♠K but not ♥K. He can't have both kings since he didn't open. Cashing ♥A picks the small extra chance that he has ♥K sec so that's what I do (the chance of ♠K sec is smaller since I have more hearts than spades). gszes
I have collected 4d and 2c and the opps have won only 1 trick so far. rho pitched a club so there are 3 clubs left. The opening lead of the K from KTxxx itself is very odd and what plausible holding could rho have in order to feel it was necessary to pitch a club at trick 5? IMHO I think we have either opp squeezed holding (Kx K void xxx or K Kx void xxx) and I would merely play a spade toward the ace (just in case lho shows out for some reason) and play a heart to the ace. It is of course plausible that a mere guess as to which major honor to play rho for can pay off but the play of the hand makes me think something odd is going on. nige1
Like Helene_t, my instinct is to cash ♥A and lead ♥x.
Phil
Seems South might have shifted to a spade without either K (he doesn't know you have the dT). And as Helen says, South can't have both K's. So hA, h.
bigbenvic
Did the J♣ have any suit preference meaning? With me it would indicate a Spade entry but if I "know" partner has no entry then it can just be the card I grab, occasionally I'll try to "mislead the declarer even" (said in my Snagglepuss voice) South doubled 2♣ and has none of AKQ so I'm thinking JTxxxx and entries. Could he have passed Kx Kxx AJ JTxxxx, not likely. So as Helene says not 2 kings and I will also cash A♥ and hope that the K♥ is with North and South has Kxx xx AJ JTxxxx.
