hrothgar
Here is another interesting hand from Friday's matchSouth is Dealer QTJAQ74AKQ972 K3AKQT9532654 Fred and Inquiry played this in 3NT after the following auction P - 1C1D - 3H3NT Inquiry started with a somewhat conservative pass and then rebid 3NT after Fred's spliter raise in support of Diamonds. [interesting question, what would a 4C rebid show in this auction?] In the other room, Sartaj opened with a weak NT. 1N - 2C2S - 3D3S - 4C5D 2S showed 2353 shape3D was KKCB for Diamonds4C show 0/1 Key cards Martson then signed off in 5D

This 12 hcp with a 5-3-3-2 comes to just 20 (12 pts in hcp plus 8 for 5D and 3 H's). I then adjust downwards for singleton or doubleton Q or J (didn't have that) or very poor anchor suit (Qxxxx Jxxxx Kxxxx)... my long suit was Ten high, and the spade king was in my doubleton suit, so two minor minuses... so I passed. Fred's 3H bid over my 1D (showing singleton or perhpas void) with a diamond fit, knocked the wind out of my excitement on this hand. I have 3/4th of my hcp in the suit my partner is short in and my anchor suit is very poor. In fact, the slam requires no diamond loser missing KJxx... so sticking seems good. I do agree that I have a VERY GOOD hand for this auction. 4Clubs by me would have been clubs... if partner had bid 4C instead of 3H it would have shown this type hand... solid clubs, great diamond fit. the hog
I think if you are going to bid slam on this 6C is better. It is still marginally below 50% - you need the D hook and no worse than a 3-1 C break. Certainly a s/t opposite AKQ does lessen the slam appeal of the hand, even if you know you are getting 2 pitchesInteresting would be 6D on a non S lead. Cash D A, 3 rds of H pitching the S losers and lead a D towards the Q.
