TomReynold
I noticed that according to one write up on the Meckwell System that they paly transfer responses after 1D/H/S-X. That makes sense but does anyone know if it is legal per the ACBL? Thanks, Tom
mikestar13
The takeout double is a convention (though it predates Contract Bridge)--the natural meaning of a double is "I don't think they can make it, let's increase the stakes" ; therefor any conventional defense to a takeout double is allowed (unless specifically excluded by the General Convention Chart, which none are WRT takeout doubles). So in the sequence 1♥-X-z any meaning for any call z is allowable (as long as properly disclosed).

mycroft
Mike is correct as far as it goes; but the ACBL world changed in May 2015. Now it is legal to play Transfer responses (or advances, but that was possible before) in any auction with competition. See COMPETITIVE, 8 (overcalls) along with COMPETITIVE, 7a (*any* meaning after takeout double). Secretary Bird Geekery ahead:I see a small hole in the GCC: in the auction 1 suit-X (PENALTY), transfer responses are not legal - the penalty double is not artificial and is not an overcall. I am certain that either this will never come up, or will be handwaved away when it does.
