Bid and play these

Recommended Posts

Encountered this hand last night, not sure how it should be bid, but the play is interesting too, would your play differ if you were in 4/5/6 and would it matter IMPs/MPs ?

South deals at game all, was in fact MPs.

I would bid 1H-1S-3D-3H-4D and now I think I sign off with 4H on the North hand. 1H-1S-3D-3H-3S-4C-4D-4H is also possible, and probably better. I would win a probable black suit lead and play ace of diamonds and ruff a diamond, cash king of hearts, cross to the other black ace and ruff a diamond, pitch a spade on the king of clubs, ruff a spade back to hand, cash the ace of hearts and continue diamonds. To make six, it seems I need hearts 3-2 and diamonds 4-3 and no uppercut or winning overruff in spades, which is around 40% (42% less a bit for the uppercut, overruff or club ruff).

Lead I got in 6 (I showed a huge hand 5-5 in the reds via an artificial 1-1-2N rebid and partner moved over 4) was a small trump. The play in 6 is reasonably simple, you just need the reds to break and the blacks not to be completely horrible. Play is more interesting in 4 or 5.

1H - 2H - 2S (relay) - 3D (singleton) - 4H

Responder can't really have enough - the best slam can be is hearts 3-2 and diamonds 4-3

At matchpoints you play 4H or 5H exactly the same way as 6H

In a 5 card major context, it might go 1H-2H-3D-3H-3S-4C-4D-4H, playing 3D as a game try showing a second suit (turning into a slam try showing a second suit). With help suit game tries, you might get 1H-2H-3D-4H-4N-5C(1430)-5D-5H-6H

After 4NT..5 is usefull to ask for Q/K in spade :5-6(=neg.ve). If Q in spade instead 6. It'd possible 2-2, 2.. but after that heart fit is found an eventual cue bid searchin could not clear K of heart.

This makes sense in a 5M system, we were playing 4 so it was always starting 1-1.

Diamonds were 5-2 with the third one being overruffed by the doubleton, so 6-2.

The line for 11 tricks as the cards lie is to play Ax, LHO has Hxx, but if you're in 5, I can't see a way of combining chances on a trump lead (although you possibly can on a minor suit lead) and would only consider it at teams.

Unblocking club and pitching spade on K of club we can use spade suit to ruff in hand playing A and K of heart and using diamond (until second round) to ruff for entry (this one gain probability that 9 of heart not is overuffed).
