Good problem.

I choose 2 with no strong conviction. I rate it as slightly preferable to 3 other options, which are pass (intending to convert the hoped-for reopening double), or 1N (an underbid) or 2N (a misdescription of general hand-type and a possible overbid).

I don't like playing for a penalty at the 1-level with a good fit for partner: somehow we usually end up with fewer tricks on defence than I was hoping to score, and this is especially problematic at unfav as here. However, there will be layouts on which we collect 300 against our partscore (of course other parlays are also possible but not having game and allowing them off the hook is probably the worst consequence of not passing).

I don't like 1N because this hand, if we are to play in notrump, offers far more than he'd expect. I don't like 2N because he'd be entitled to expect a little more in the side suits, in length if not values, and LHO may have a suit that he can profitably lead.

2 keeps 3N in play, and may lead to a good high-level diamond contract, even a slam on a hand on which he would raise 2N to 3N.

Somehow, raising when one has real support tends, in my experience, to lead to better outcomes on balance than does showing similar values while concealing support.

I intend to pass 3 if that is his reaction.

IMPs, vul against not, 2/1 with no gadget for this situation. There seem to be many choices, what is yours?[/hv]

Instead of marks, here's my order of preference...

  1. 2: Good raise.
  2. 1N: Showing a stop.
  3. 2N: Slight overbid.
  4. 3: Partner might bid 3.
  5. 2: Underbid.
  6. Pass: Leaves opponents room to find their real fit.
