Can I avoid the Squeeze ?

Recommended Posts

This is my first post so please bear with me if I am not able to post the hand

I was sitting south against a 5C contract and I was squeezed in the end - could I have avoided it ?

I don't think you can, the best chance to break it up is for partner to win the first spade and lead a heart, he then wins the diamond and plays another heart which means that now declarer can't ruff a diamond and still have an entry to dummy. Unfortunately declarer doesn't need to ruff a diamond as partner only has 2 and you're still squeezed.

Had you raised to 4, you might have found yourself playing 4X-1.

GIB would try hearts and fall back on the diamond finesse if hearts aren't 33. I'm surprised declarer didn't try this anyway.

In that case you have to lead the diamond first. In fact playing hearts first should be really obvious on a spade lead as it succeeds against H or Hx with the preempt as well.
