inquiry
There is a theory call OBAR for opponents bid and raise... where you pre-balance with shape. The double of 2♣ was perfect obar bid, and his partner should bid some diamonds.
Guest Jlall
north had a 1D bid, and a 3D bid over the X.

mr1303
I have some sympathy with the pass over 1C rather than bidding 1D, but after the double the trumps are nowhere near good enough to pass the double. If partner is known for pre-balancing, 2D is ok, otherwise 3D. Passing the double is just wrong.
Flame
I usually dont overcall 1♦ with 5 card and 9 hcp but with all those 9s and 8s i think its right to bid 1♦, partner's double is good, passing the 2c is a bad idea, should bid 3D, passing could work sometime when opps are vul at mp to give us 200, but usually it risks too much. Winstonm
I would certainly prefer a diamond lead rather than a low heart or spade from Qxxx, so although minimum a 1D overcall looks right on this hand; after the double, it appears to be worth about 2 1/2 diamonds so I don't have a real problem with the jump to 3 or the conservative 2 diamond approach - seems either way partner will have to have substantial extras for our side to have a game. There is no reason to expect the opponents can't make 2C.
