nige1
[hv=pc=n&n=sqhk3daj765ca7652&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=3s]133|200| You are playing a Teams Match and are getting ready to open the bidding when dealer opens 3♠ in front of you. mike777
strongly prefer 4nt to be a much more pure hand. keep in mind 4nt may get a 6 level bid not just a game bid. yes we may miss game.
P_Marlowe
Pass, wtp? The only alternative to Pass is 4NT, and the suits are too weak. With kind regardsMarlowe
jodepp
I don't think this is much of a problem. Pass has to be best long-term; there is no safe way to show minors (I really like the comment about 'pure hand' in a previous post). I would aver that if one cannot resist bidding on a hand like this, one might be letting the opponents push one around.
ArtK78
If ever a hand looked like any action other than pass was ticketed for a four-figure minus score, this is the hand. I would pass. I hope that partner can act if it is our hand.
apollo1201
Hate it but pass. My suits are weakish (god it is a lot of losers), I’m red (so was opener so he shouldnt be too garbage), LHO might just wait for me to move to fire a 4 digit X, and part might push me too high (6m) expecting better. In the meantime, pard can still balance. But if it goes 4s pass pass I’ll still be scr**ed. And enplayed on the lead. Oh well, next board please. Who said that preempts do work? What do you bid?The hairs on the back of my neck tell me to PASS A takeout double would be misleading as you cannot tolerate ♥ Sometimes you have to accept you will be gazumped but it's all in the game. Had the pre-empt been in third seat instead of the dealer,I might havechanced my arm but with LHO not having yet bid,it's far too risky to take any action..... akwoo
Let's see - to make 5 of a minor, the least I need partner to show up with KQxx in one minor and Kx in the other, as well as A♥ onside. To make 4 hearts, I need partner to show up with AQ 7th and a king, which partner might balance with (if the king is not in spades, and 3♠ is likely down if it is, so we don't lose quite as much). Yes it's possible to miss out on a game by passing, but partner would really need the perfect cards. That being said, there LOLs at my club who wouldn't balance with ♠x ♥AQxx ♦KQxx ♣Kxxx. Opposite one of them I might guess a random 5 of a minor. (They wouldn't understand 4N. Diamonds is a stronger suit, but I can run from clubs if opponents double.) We were already getting a 0 misdefending 3♠. (When they play with each other they average about 35%.)

dkham
Thanks for all the replies. PASS was the overwhelming winner in the poll. Just for interest, here is the full hand (and auction): [hv=pc=n&s=st5ha965dq82cq843&w=saj76432hqj7d9cj9&n=sqhk3daj765ca7652&e=sk98ht842dkt43ckt&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=3sd4sppp]399|300[/hv] I chose to DOUBLE, which I now agree is pretty poor, although it did have the unexpected benefit of pushing East into bidding a bad 4♠ (saving me from putting down my two Hearts as dummy in 4♥).
