Modified Cappelletti - passing 2D relay

Recommended Posts

This came up playing modified Cappelletti over a weak NT, but I guess applies to any 1NT defense where a relay can be passed. After 1NT - 2 - pass - 2 - pass - pass, with the 2 bidder having a diamond suit - it seems hard for them to evaluate their hand as partner's strength is unknown. We missed a 3NT game here with ca. 25 hcp between us - can this be catered for with different responses, say relaying 3 to show 12+ or something like that? Or is it not going to happen v often so not worth worrying about?

Hi,

the penalty double allowes you, to limit the strength of the overcall.

Against a weak NT you go in with constructive values, this is the lower

bound, the upper bound is given by the strength needed for the penalty

double.

Also 2D is the weak relay, the strong relay is 2NT, 2NT promises at least

inv.+ strength.

Using 3D instead of 2D risks going overboard in a misfit auction, when the

partner of the overcaller is broke.

With kind regards

Marlowe

In my part of the world, the 'modified' part of modified Cappelletti comes from switching the meaning of 2C and 2D rebids.

2C = Both Majors.

2D = 6c Major.

2M = 5c Major & 4+c Minor.

Whatever it's called, this method of Cappelletti offers a lot of subtle advantages over the variant that you're currently playing. My advice would be to read a bit more about it online and then give this version a try so you can decide for yourself!

If you have some interest opposite , you can respond 2. If you also like , bid 2, etc. Advancer's bid should be the first suit he doesn't like. It's similar to bidding after Multi 2.

I do not agree, I think it's much more important to be able to bid 2 and 2 natural over 2. With game interest you still have 2NT available.

Pass or correct bids work fine with 2 possible suits, but not very well with 4 especially when one player hasn't had a chance to show a suit yet.
