Yogi Berra lives!

Yes, I know that Yogi Berra is still alive. But, somehow, the title is appropriate for the master of the unintentional malaprop.

I found this quote from Sheldon Adelson on Card Player.com this morning. Discussing the downturn in profits for Las Vegas Sands, in part due to a dramatic downturn in casino business profitability in Macau, Adelson was quoted as saying:

"The operating environment in Macau, particularly in the high-end gaming segments, remained challenging during the quarter," Adelson said on a conference call, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. "I know you're all waiting for me to predict if we've reached the bottom in Macau. It's very difficult to make predictions, particularly about the future."

Now, there are plenty of people who don't like Sheldon Adelson. But no one has ever accused him of being stupid. I suspect he made this comment intentionally and knowingly. Perhaps the man is a laugh riot. But one never knows.

"It's very difficult to make predictions, particularly about the future." is certainly a very old saying. I think that it survives partly because it has sort of a clever touch, but also because there are som many people in so many profession (everyone can supply his own favorite examples) who are excellent at explaining, after the fact, why it was obvious that such and such would happen. Making "retroactive preictions" is a bit easier, no?
