Meta Rules for artificial interference over 1C

Recommended Posts

For potentially artificial interference of our strong club (particularly 1S through 2H) we're looking for simple meta rules. For example 1C (2D) might be...

1. diamonds or majors

2. hearts or blacks

3. diamonds or hearts

4. hearts

5. diamonds or short diamonds

6. 2 of same color

I'm sure there are a few other meanings we could encounter. I'd like to get full value for a bid of 2N here...i.e. I don't want dbl and 2N to essentially mean the same thing.

I've thought it might be necessary to have two sets of meta rules...one where the bid could potentially be natural and the other where the bid tends to deny the suit.

For natural interference we're using a transfer approach largely copying from IMPrecision where 2N is natural GF.

So if potentially natural, we could "stay in system" and dbl would be takeout and 2N natural GF etc. Transfers on.

My take on the above is that it simply isn't worth catering to all possibilities. For example, a purported natural bid could be a psyche; the opponents may not be sure of their own methods; the call could be natural or exclusionary (think psycho-suction), or some combination thereof.

My strong preference would be to keep things simple, i.e., use only three meta-rules:

1) The cheapest NT bid is natural and GF. Subsequent rebid of their suit is natural and ostensibly exposes a psyche

2) X over a natural overcall is takeout oriented. Over any kind of junk bid, X sets up a GF with no clear direction (PDI applies)

3) 2-level bids are transfers, but there's never a transfer to a suit that we couldn't have bid naturally at the 2-level over their interference. If they claim to have more than one suit, simply ignore the over call

In other words, show what you have and don't care about what they claim to have.

How about...

dbl-is takeout if the overcall can be natural. If the overcall is Suction or a transfer then double is takeout of the presumed suit

cheapest NT=GF balanced with stopper in their presumed suit

transfers at the 2-level. Our 2S bid is always GF and frequently will be GF with their presumed suit.

cue bid=natural

Example 1

1C (2D) showing diamonds or hearts. Presume then diamonds

.....P-includes GF balanced without diamond stopper

.....dbl-takeout of diamonds

.....2H-spades

.....2S-GF hearts

.....2N-GF balanced with diamond stopper

.....3C-GF clubs

.....3D-GF diamonds now......so this is different

Example 2

1C (2D) showing hearts or blacks. Presume then hearts

.....P-includes GF balanced hands without heart stopper

.....dbl-takeout of hearts

.....2H-spades

.....2S-GF hearts

.....2N-GF balanced with heart stopper

.....3C-GF clubs

.....3D-GF diamonds

So tricky ones are things like CRASH... so 2D showing say two of same color.....I guess treat as natural.

Also not sure what to do with overcalls that show 2 known suits.

If simplicity is the ultimate goal, you can't beat the simplest system of all:

Concentrate on the bid, not the meaning of the bid.

So, if they overcall 2, whatever it means (hearts, spades or minors, both majors, whatever), just assume it shows long hearts and act accordingly.

It may not be the optimal system, but if you're looking for a KISS approach, it can't be beat.
