All white at matchpoints, you hold:

KQx

J10x

AQxxxx

x

RHO opens 1C, you overcall 1D, LHO passes, partner bids 1S and RHO rebids 2C. Your call.

If you double, please explain what this shows.

I was not playing raptor or the like, so I could have had 4 spades for my 1D overcall.

This is an interesting hand. I will not worry about having only 3 card support, I have very strong three card support and I am short in their suit (which is good if we are in 4-3 fit). So I am ok (in principle) with any type of spade raise. The question becomes what type.

I will nto rebid diamonds, why? I HAVE SPADE SUPPORT.

One thought is to double (presumably showing hearts and diamonds), and then pull a red suit bid by partner back to spades. That is about right on stregnth. But I will not do that, because what if west finds he has some clubs in there with his hand and raises now. So I think a direct spade raise is best. I like 3 as mixed raise, and that is what I wuld bid if it meant that. If not, I would bid 2NT or 3 whichever shows a good raise to 3. I choose other as my choice in the poll because my three choices in order of preference are not listed in the poll.

Indeed, my partner had in fact Axxx xx J10x K10xx. Would anybody not bid 1S with this hand (we don 't play Polish notrump overcalls)? As you can see, 3D is the best spot, but we didn't get there.

I hear you ask "where are the hearts". My LHO had initially passed out of turn, and was forced to pass the first round of bidding. I thought that the problem was interesting enough without this complication.

Sorry but 4S sounds like ALERT

Must admit bidding 1s with responder hand would never enter my mind.

Must admit I played partner for 8-11 "working HCP" and 5 or 6 spades, not 5 working hcp and axxx of s.

If "anybody" is bidding 1s on this hand...I have so much to learn, so little time.

Might help if we knew about bid out of turn though, oh well.

I'm OK with either 2 or 1N. Even though I play 1 as a one round force (who wants to play exactly 1??) I think it misdecribes then hand.

Its certainly tougher if you don't play Raptor or overcall structure, since pard could have a buried 4 card spade suit. But with any kind of extra values, he'll come alive.

I'm a simple 2S bidder here. I don't believe 1S is constructive in this sequence and it would usually show some disinterest in diamonds. If pard has pulled my overcall with AJ9742, K43, 64, J9 I don't want to punish him. He still has another bid, and I didn't have to bid at all so the simple raise would show some modicum of cards, which means it is up to partner in my opinion to make the game try, not me.

If I am supposed to bid 1S with this hand I am sorely out of touch - even at MPs where bad bidding rules the day, LoL.

I am old fashioned. Partner bid and I have support - I do something unheard of I guess - I raise partner: 2D.
