Partner Doubles The Preempt

Recommended Posts

Mps may be worth a gamble, hoping to nip it a trick but I wouldn't do it. I bid 3 at all scoring and hope to survive

May I ask why 3 as opposed to 3?

FWIW I was the doubler on this hand, my partner had the problem

If partner has classic shape, 3 is better. When he is off-shape, he will have 4 hearts slightly more frequently than he will have 4 diamonds. Having said that, he will have 5 diamonds more often than 5 hearts. I think it to be very close.

One reason to bid 3D is that 3H is more likely to be raised to the four level. This is only useful if you can rely on partner to have classic shape, of course.

Does form of scoring make a difference?[/hv]

IMO 3 = 10. 3 = 9. Pass = 8. 3 = 6. 3N = 5.

Pass is more attractive at MPs. Other posters seem to be right that 3 is the safest improvisation.

  • 3 is less likely to be raised.
  • 3 gives partner room to bid 3M, which you can pass.
  • When you might be fixed, partner is aware that, the more expensive the strain, the more likely it is to be real a suit.
