gwnn
XKCD chimed in on it today, too http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/dress_color.pngThat's pretty awful. he should have used the same colours on both sides. I'm usually not amused by xkcd and this one is no exception.
diana_eva
Opened BBF. Went to New content. Was reading this "Do you mostly play normal bridge? Or try to do strange things to fool the robots? " while looking at the dress and trying to figure out what the big deal is. I'll answer the robot thing.

What do you mean? It is precisely the change in background colour that creates the "illusion".
barmar
I don't see the difference on the two sides of the XKCD. But I certainly wouldn't see a difference if he hadn't changed the background colors, since then they would really be the same. One of the most well known effects like this is the checker shadow illusion.
gwnn
What do you mean? It is precisely the change in background colour that creates the "illusion".Zoom in, the "blue" pixels are actually darker on the right, and the "yellow" pixels are brighter on the left. edit: oops, no they're not! I looked at it under zoom last time but that's not really enough to escape the illusion. maybe xkcd sucks but I suck more I guess. :)
jjbrr
gwnn, xkcd doesn't suck. it's just you.
Zelandakh
You can make the background as dark as you like - it still will not convince me to see this as white. I have a little more sympathy to the black but even that seems weird. Indeed, it amazes me that the colour options mostly being talked about are blue/black or white/gold, since neither seems right to me. I thought it was some kind of internet set up. Oh, and yes I am aware that the real dress is blue and black - I just do not see the colour in the photo as a black. Indeed the blue I see is also much lighter than the real world colour.....but white? it takes some serious imagination to see white!

The dress appears, in the photo, to be in shadow, people see white because the brain is assuming that the dress is "lit" by blue or bluish light. These "light" illusions are really effective. For another illusion involving colour and not just light or dark, check out the cube illusion on this page.
