It surprised me, but I don't get out much...

Well, it's negative in the sense of showing a bad hand in high cards opposite a 2 opener. It's pretty standard for double = bad hand at lower levels. Whether this should still apply over 4M is up for debate, perhaps double should show some other hand type over higher preempts.

 

It's not negative double in the same way as after say 1h-(4s)-x where it can be played to show good hand, minors.
