A preemptive action by a vulnerable dealer

Recommended Posts

Why not dbl then 3n?

You can't bid 3n over 4M. Maybe you think when partner bids 4M we have enough for 6 of something, but that isn't always obvious, especially with bad splits after preempt and partner possibly having no diamonds and expecting you to have more than 2 of a major.

I've been trying to figure out how to get pard to raise me to slam if I bid a good hand with diamonds (say dbl + pull to 5)... but I think it's far too difficult for him find a raise, even if he has one.

I think I have to make the final call now... it's either 3NT (zia heat 2 or 3) or 6 (heat 1).

Double followed by 5 seems right. Partner needs the A and either the K, QJ or xxx to make slam very good or cold, and the A and Kxx or KQ would make a grand very good or cold.

I can't settle for 3NT, although it could be the limit of the hand (LHO has KQx of diamonds and 2 or fewer clubs and leads a club or similar layouts - hope the preempter does not have the A if partner doesn't have it).

He may tank and sweat, but he ought to find it if he has values in diamonds and the other major. I saw a very similar hand today in a local game, only the call was 4 vulnerable I think - 6 bid and made.

3nt is too timid imo. Doesn't 4nt show this hand? I wonder if 4nt is safer than 5d. 4nt has the advantage that even when it fails on a heart lead they don't always find it. And sometimes p corrects to 5d when it's right.

What about dbl and then 5d if p bid spades but 3nt if he bids hearts?

Since this is MP 3n is likely to score better than any other contract

other than a making 6 or 7 level. Those hands will be tough to bid with

our hand having so many controls.

At IMPS I would have much more slam interest in mind and try 4d. I dislike

the idea of x first since the subsequent bidding will tell us little to nothing

useful about partners hand and with partner having little to no room for controls

slam will be tough to reach. At least over 4d if p bids 4h or 4s we know they have

a pretty long suit (surely they will avoid 4M on xxxxxx) with some stuff. This

information alone might allow us to reach 6M rather than relying solely on diamonds.
