Jinksy
KT83AKJ963KT7 You're playing 4 card majors and weak NT, at IMPs. Unfavourable all in third, the bidding goes P P 1♥ 3♦P P What's your action? Assume no discussion about what Xing and then pulling 4♣ to 4♥ would be. At the table, this hand passed. Should any perceptive souls suspect any similarity between this and the other thread*, I'll add another question - who takes the lion's share of the blame? Or are both equally wimpy? * In the other thread I stated it was pairs. I've since found out is was X-IMPs (I didn't play the hand). Please say if that affects your ATB answer. PhilKing
I am staggered by the number of votes for double. Yuck!
whereagles
I vote 3♥. Make it easy on you and pard :)
blackshoe
"pairs" ≠ "matchpoints". "Pairs" is a type of game. "Matchpoints" and "Cross-IMPs" are types of scoring. </nitpick>
wank
i doubt we can make game after partner's pass. i wouldn't double because i'm nowhere near strong enough to commit to game considering partner's most likely response is 4 clubs. so the choice is 3H or pass. i think the chances of going plus are greater on defence. the argument for bidding is finding partner with enough to raise, despite my doubting it's very likely, but there's also a fair risk of getting sawn off - we are at the 3 level on what will often be a working 11 count with no known fit and signs of bad breaks. AyunuS
I would say 3♥. Given one opponent didn't open so he has at most 11 points and the other one probably has at most about 10 for the preempt, your partner should have at least 5 points, and probably 6-9. So I'd figure you'd most likely either make 3♥ or at least be close enough to it in order to not get that bad of a score by bidding it. daffydoc
pass gives the hand away - pard has some cards and game on qjxxx S is easy - so I cannot pass - pard must be brought into this auction as pass is way too unilateral - will I go for a number? possible but I will make way more games and collect more numbers by doubling as opposed to passing. daffydoc
keithhus
Hi all. I commented on the previous hand on the basis that it was a strong jump over all,; Helene put me right. Given a pre-empt and pass by Ops, I would bid 3H. Could someone advise please (I am a beginner), how I would know whether ibid is a pre-empt or strong over-call. Do the Ops need to declare? Thank you

Do the Ops need to declare? Thank you There is a simple rule for this: If the opening is constructive, a jump overcall is destructive (preempt). If the opening is destructive, a jump overcall is constructive (strong).
helene_t
That's a simple rule you can use for your own jump overcalls but you can't assume that opps play that way.You wwill have to ask.
