Upgrade or not

Recommended Posts

Not for me. People always seem to want to upgrade mega-good hands, and it feels like an extension of the learner's desire to bid strong hands twice.

If anything it seems like you should lean towards conservatism, since hands tend to play worse the more imbalanced the strength is. Here I have 7 tricks with little hope of establishing an 8th on length (unless P has 4 Hs, in which case I'm likely to finding myself in a contract needing an extra 3 tricks), and if I open 2, I'd certainly expect P to raise me with eg Axx xxx xxx xxxx.

That said, I think playing 2N as 20-21 and 2C as 22+ is much better. Have the uncomfortably wide range come up as infrequently as possible.

This. And it isn't just learners, BBOers with thousands of logs also overuse their forcing opening.

Not close to an upgrade for me.

FWIW Kaplan-Rubens 9(knr) rates this as 21.60. The less complex Danny Kleinman count is a bad 22. Figures from the Goldschmidt site.

Neither count has been shown to be an improvement over hcp for notrump bidding, but we can take it that even in a suit contract this isn't outside the specified 20-22 range. No need to upgrade.

I think its close but no cigar. I would not mind leaping to 4h if p happens

to transfer to hearts but that is the extent of my upgrade. The hcp value

happens to exactly equal the number of available tricks and almost no way

to produce anything extra.

Would you really be happy opening 2c 2d 2n 3d and be happy about merely

bidding 3h????? ick and if you super accept just how much will p play

you for? best to stay our of trouble and miss an occasional seeing eye slam.
