whereagles
IMPS [hv=pc=n&n=sjt852ha92dq873c6&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=1cp1sdp4h]133|200[/hv] 1♣ was three-way: (a) Nat with clubs (usually 5, but can be 3-4 if 18-19 bal)(b) Preparatory with bal 12-14 (can have better diamonds)(c.) Strong, 21+ H Passing 1♠X usually shows hand (b) or hand (a) with a min. It does not deny 3 spades. Bid?
kgr
Clear pass for me.I don't have much more than what I already promised.
mikeh
Pass. Am I protecting a game? I don't think so, tho I'd like to know if partner could have raised with 3 spades (or made a support double). Do they rate to go for a number? Maybe, but I doubt it. gszes
We already know p is not strong (no xx) and is most likely without spade supportsince no 2s or 3s bid (yes they might have 3) but our hand has no clear path to anywhereon a hand that looks poor for offense. Gambling we might take 2 hearts and hoping p can take 2 other tricks is not unreasonable but if p has a poor defensive hand where will theygo that is not a disaster??? Pass Is the better part of valor here since we still have a partner that can surprise us :)
whereagles
(...) I'd like to know if partner could have raised with 3 spades (or made a support double). No supp redouble, no free raises on 3 cards. Added that information to OP.
Fluffy
What do I have that partner is not expecting?
jogs
Double. Partner rates to have (b). What do I have that partner is not expecting? The ♥A and stiff club. Double planning to lead the stiff club. When our suit patterns don't fit, neither do theirs.
whereagles
Thx all. Full hand: [hv=pc=n&s=sq74htdk962caqj98&w=sak93hq643dckt542&n=sjt852ha92dq873c6&e=s6hkj875dajt54c73&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=1cp1sdp4hdppp]399|300|1C = three-way (nat 5+/bal 12-14/strong art)[/hv]I needed a few imps back so I doubled thinking "well, they're certainly not making an overtrick" http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif The signs of a set are all there: HCP about 20-20, singleton on what rates to be pard's main suit, trump control, and a defensive ♦Q. I led the singleton club to pard's ace. The sight of dummy was not pleasant and, on top of that, pard erred by not giving me the club ruff. Declarer now had a chance to make it, but messed up and ended 1 down (+9 imps). I was careful not to point out to pard that he could have rebid 2♣ on such a nice suit.. lol. (After which a speculative dbl becomes even more attractive.)

Jinksy
According to GiB, it makes even if he does give you the ♣ ruff. Though I think W has to duck if S returns an honour?
WesleyC
My choice of pass on this hand was influenced by the fact that I (most people?) play double here as 'cards' rather than 'penalties'. What else are you supposed to do with a 5143 shape and game values? However if have specifically discussed that double here is a penalty suggestion, then it's a very reasonable shot. Cthulhu D
Yeah, he needs to take the KC after a ton of cross ruffing otherwise he cannot come to the 10th trick.
